28 April 2012 | By: Seth Shafer Despite several positive factors working in its favor — including unseasonably warm weather and the opening of the new Revel casino — the casinos that call Atlantic City home continued to struggle in March, with gambling revenues slipping by 5% in March as compared to 2011. Revenue from the slots and table games at the 12 casinos in Atlantic City fell 5 percent to $266 million, compared to $281 million a year ago, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement reported. Slot revenue dipped 3 percent to $191 million, while profits from table games plummeted 11 percent to $75 million. Hopes had been high that the opening of the new $2.4 billion Revel casino — the first new AC casino to open up in many years — would jump-start a resurgence in visitor traffic and gamblng revenue in the area but it failed to have the hoped for effect, although the real impact of Revel won’t be seen until April figures are released. Revel held three days of soft-opening play in late March before its official opening April 2, with the dress rehearsal of sorts producing $163,000 in gambling revenue. Revels first full month of revenue will be reflected in Aprils results. Warm weather and two extra weekend days weren’t enough to halt the slide in revnues that has continued unabated for several years. Gambling revenues have steadily dropped in Atlantic City since their peak in 2006, as increased competition from neighboring states and a struggling US economy has left the area struggling mightily when it comes to gambling. Macau is now by far the world’s largest gambling market — surpassing Las Vegas back in 2006 — and the Sands Cotai Central is not just the latest Macau casino to open but will be the newest arrival for quite some time, as government approval and construction time means that it will be a least 2015 before a newer casino is opened in Macau. Macau’s growth as a gambling center has been meteoric, with revenue growth of 27% in the first three months of 2012 that followed up an amazing surge of 42% growth in 2011; Macau’s gambling haul of $33.5 billion in 2011 was more than five times the amount earned by Las Vegas Strip casinos. China continues to fuel the gambling boom in Macau, with high stakes baccarat players flocking to the area now that a nearby gambling alternative is open to them, instead of being forced to make a long trip to Vegas or other gambling centers as was the case in the past. In 2011 the District of Columbia became the first area to pass legislation that could allow it to offer online casino and poker sites to residents; delays and questions have plagued the initiative, however, with the possibility that the entire endeavor may be scrapped before ever seeing the light of day. That hasn’t stopped legislators in Ney Jersey, California, and Nevada from pursuing very similar legislation, with a recent ruling by the US Department of Justice clarifying the scope of the Wire Act to apply only to sportsbetting — and not to other activites such as online poker or online lotto ticket sales — adding more fuel to the fire. With many US states still struggling with high unemployment and dipping property values, a pitch for online gambling is much more receptive to voters’ ears than in the past. As far as the potential money at stake from legalizing online gambling in the US, estimates vary widely depending on which side of the debate you fall on. “All In” Poker Movie Hits the Theaters
24 March 2012 | By: Seth Shafer The new poker movie “All In: The Poker Movie” hit movie theaters last week, with the film taking a close look at not just the booming poker industry in the US but also the impact of the US government’s actions on Black Friday in April 2011 when it moved to block many of the world’s top online poker sites. Directed by Douglas Tirola and produced by 4th Row Films, the movie tackles the big task of telling the story of poker in America, touching on different facets of the game and how it has evolved during its 200 years or so of being played in the US. While the entire history of poker in the US is touched upon, the primary focus of the film is the last decade or so of poker, which has been a particularly tumultuous time with the poker boom of the early to mid 2000s followed by the efforts of the US government to prevent US citizens from playing at online poker sites. “All In” doesn’t necessarily have an agenda behind it but it does go to great lengths to point out the ironic fact that a game so uniquely American — with millions of US citizens avidly playing poer every year — would become a target for government authorities who enacted laws to take the decision over whether or not to play online poker out of the hands of millions of residents. Many of poker’s top pros are interviewed and appear in the film (including Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu, Chris Ferguson, Greg Raymer, and Mike Sexton just to name a few) as well as industry insiders and executives as well as movie stars and entertainers such as Matt Damon and Kenny Rogers. 9 March 2012 | By: Seth Shafer Atlantic City casinos are still struggling to find any glimmers of hope as monthly revenues slid once again in February, dipping nearly 6% compared to the same period in 2011. It’s been a protracted steady decline for Atlantic City’s casino operators, with revenue declining for more than five years since a peak in 2006. Atlantic City has struggled more than other gambling destinations such as Las Vegas (which has seen visitor traffic and spending gradually mending since the latest recession in the US) as many of its casino properties are older and dated, with fewer entertainment and shopping options such as are found in Vegas. Overall gambling revenue in February in Atlantic City was down 5.9%, with slot machine revenue down 4.2% and table game revenue off 10.3%. For the first two months of the year, revenues were down 6.6% from the same period in 2011. Eight of the 11 casinos saw their revenue decline, led by The Atlantic Club which saw revenue plummet by 29% to $8.3 million. The Tropicana Casino and Resort didn’t fare too much better with revenue sliding 27%, to $14.5 million, while Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino was down 22% to $9 million. As far as the gainers, the three in the positive column were led by The Golden Nugget Atlantic City, where revenues were up 18%. The Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa booked a 7% gain while Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City was up 4% percent. Much of Atlantic City’s woes are directly related to the fastest growing casino market in the US in Pennsylvania, where newer casinos and an expansion of the games offered continues to siphon away more and more visitors that previously headed to Atlantic City.
